The  Bayview Imani Breast Cancer Support Group are “Women Working Together for a Healthier Community.” The Support group was founded in October 2001 due to a greater need for more specific attention to be placed on breast cancer survivors in the communities of Bayview Hunter’s Point, Potrero Hill, Visitacion Valley and Sunnydale. The primary focus is to provide breast health education and support groups for African-American women as well as addressing other health disparities such as diabetes, hypertension and nutrition. Hence the development of an organization that would not only embody, but address fears and concerns surrounding breast cancer, most especially for low income, underserved African-American Women in the community. The Bayview Imani Breast Cancer Support Group, a local support unit, meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month where women can find comfort, feel safe, gather information and understand that they are not alone in the fight against breast cancer. The women are also given the opportunity to plan fundraisers special events, and help encourage other survivors to participate.
